_________ Preserved Power Unit Final Component Summary _________
Power units still extant following
preservation and their individual components, with life expectancy circa
1981 (list complied by Carl Looker):
"This report has been produced to
show the status, as at the end of BR Class 55 operation on 2 January 1982,
of the individual components of the 17 D18-25 power units which entered
preservation . Information has been taken from the BR component record cards
which are held in the archives of the National Railway Museum in York. Due
to the frequent interchange of components between power units, taking a
reading from the Engine Hour Recorder on the triangle does not always give a
complete picture of the power unit as a whole.
After general repairs the triangles were expected to run for 7,500 hours
before the next general repair was due, main generators were expected to run
to 10,000 hours between general repairs. Up to late 1979, phasing cases and
scavenge blowers were also expected to run to 10,000 hours after overhaul,
but this proved to be over optimistic, there were only 2 instances of
blowers running to over 9,000 hours (with one exception, see below) and life
expectancy was reduced to 5,000 hours after overhaul for cases and blowers.
Some of the phasing cases in later years were given 'light attention' and
had their life expectancies increased by 5,000 hours after this, it is not
known what extent of work constituted 'light attention' but it can be
assumed that this was somewhat short of a full general overhaul.
During the 1970's it would appear that some experiments took place into
extending the periods that both phasing cases and scavenge blowers could run
between overhauls. Phasing case 425 ran to 13,234 hours from 7/8/75 to
30/10/79 between general overhauls with 4 'light attention' exams at
approximately 2,500 hour intervals. Phasing case 436 (currently fitted to
triangle 423) ran to 11,986 hours from 30/12/75 to 5/2/79 between overhauls
with 3 'light attention' exams after 6,500 hours had been run, these were at
irregular intervals. Scavenge blower 430 ran to 12,672 hours from 5/11/74 to
18/2/80 between general overhauls with a 'light attention' exam at 11,000
hours in 1979.
The last phasing case to receive a full general overhaul was no. 450 (now
fitted to triangle 413), this was completed on 10/7/81, in addition this
case was not used on a triangle between 30/1/73 and 16/3/78 and must be
considered as being in the best condition of the surviving cases. The last
scavenge blower to receive a full general overhaul was no. 424, this was
completed on 3/6/81 but was fitted to triangle 445 and this power unit was
scrapped.
The series III phasing cases (538/539) were never fitted to series II
triangles staying with their respective triangles for their whole lives. The
series III scavenge blowers were interchanged with series II power units,
although triangle 538 didn't lose its original blower until late 1979. There
was an additional scavenge blower numbered 704, this was last fitted to
triangle 446 which was scrapped.
It should be noted that 2 triangles were fitted with short life pistons
during their final overhauls, power unit 415 had pistons fitted with a life
expectancy of 2,784 hours during its Intermediate 'B' repair completed
10/2/1981. Triangle 424 had pistons with lives of 2,333 hours fitted during
its Intermediate 'B' completed 21/1/1981, in addition the phasing case and
scavenge blower were not overhauled and were also 'half-life' components.
Some components fitted to other triangles in the last year of operation
(1981) were already overdue overhaul and these were given negative life
expectancies.
In conclusion, as at 2/1/82 most main generators which went on to be
preserved had good or excellent life expectancies, the least being A146P
fitted to triangle 434 which had a life expectancy of 5,764 hours as at
25/9/80 with well over a year of BR service ahead. The picture with the
phasing cases and scavenge blowers is much more mixed with blower 428
already being 2,220 hours overdue overhaul when fitted to triangle 419 on
24/4/81. Power unit 449 had both phasing case and blower at 510 hours
overdue overhaul as at 28/9/81. The outstanding candidate for the power unit
in the best overall condition is unit 423, the last to receive a general
repair and fitted with all components at 'zero' hours. Additionally, this
unit has not accumulated further hours since 2/1/82. Unit 430 which received
the penultimate general repair was fitted with a main generator which was
not at 'zero' hours." (Carl Looker).
