Update to last nights news item regarding Spitfire Railtours 'un-confirmed' tour with 55022 from Preston to Dundee on 20th November:
This tour is in negotiation with Martin Walker, owner of 55022, however at this time a more likely date for the tour would be 4th December. Any further details are awaited.

55022 should be in action on Tuesday 24th August. The locomotive is expected to haul a train of thirteen carriages over a section of the WCML for crew training purposes. No further details at present.

D9009 was in action yesterday at the Great Central Railway - the photo above sees the locomotive passing Charnwood Water with the 2A29 14:15 Loughborough - Leicester service after smoking out those standing on the footbridge!. More photos here.

Deltics: The Final Roar Alistair McLean In 1980, the first of the Deltics was withdrawn from service. By late 1981, they had all gone, after two decades as Britain’s fastest and most powerful locos. This unique class of twenty-two diesel locomotives was powered by twin Napier Deltic engines, originally designed for minesweepers, but utilised in these high power, high speed locomotives. Designed for the East Coast Main Line, the Deltics were a common sight from Kings Cross to Aberdeen, with occasional forays onto other routes. Alistair McLean spent the last year of Deltic power photographing the various members of the class throughout the country. His images give an idea of the power of the Deltics, as well as their scrapping. Luckily for us, today, six members of the class survive in preservation, with some being used in main line service on an occasional basis, some thirty years after withdrawal from service. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Alistair McLean has been a life-long enthusiast of the Deltics and spent much of 1980-81 photographing the class all over the UK. He lives in Glasgow. This is his third book.
