. In view of the fact that the
locomotive had been in service over seven months since previous Classified Repair it is difficult to
believe that this fault had been present all that time
. On the other hand I can see no reason for the
cable becoming disturbed in service

Conclusions: 15.12.71 DME KX states: This locomotive had been standing at York since 20th November and
was its first working, therefore I would suggest that due to the bad weather conditions the exhaust
lagging may have been damp and the reported fault may just have been the lagging drying out - please
see subsequent casualty on 23.11.71
. In many of these cases there is really no need for the driver to
fail the locomotive, but it is difficult to be critical of anyone being cautious in these circumstances
.

23 - 1S32 12:00 King's Cross - Aberdeen, to Peterborough (19 minute delay Peterborough - 1511 forward).
Casualty report states: flashed over when accelerating after shutting off for temporary adverse
signals & exhaust drum lagging smouldering on both engines

Conclusions: 15.12.71 DME KX states: Both of these defects are all too common on this class of
locomotive. I cannot help feeling though that there was no real need for the driver to fail the
locomotive, but it is difficult to criticise him for being cautious in these circumstances - neither of
these defects were in themselves sufficient to cause a casualty but no doubt occurring together
unduly alarmed the driver
.
