When class 40 No.D249 derailed at Grantshouse, ECML, traffic had to be diverted. D9006 with the 1A23 08:30 King's Cross - Edinburgh, "The Talisman" was diverted via Galashiels, St Boswells, Kelso & Tweedmouth. This may have been the first Deltic over the Waverley route between Edinburgh & St Boswells and would most certainly have been an interesting machine over the ex NB & NE lines between St Boswells & Tweedmouth. This route closed on June 15th 1964.

During the week commencing 17th October 1977 unofficial industrial action led to the removal of Deltics from all ECML workings. Action was taken by maintenance staff angry at the proposed closure of Finsbury Park Depot with the introduction of the new HST fleet, which was to be maintained at the new Bounds Green Depot. Maintenance staff 'blacked' the Deltic fleet thus all engines remained 'laid-up' at various installations until the dispute was settled on October 21st. A list of how the dispute affected the class is as follows:

1979

27.03.79
On Tuesday 27th March 1979 55006 re-engined the 1S60 20:00 King's Cross - Aberdeen at York, No.6 having been turned off York TMD with power unit faults and restricted to one engine. This was during the Penmanshiel diversions and the train was sent via Carlisle, however, with 55006 on one engine progress was slow and the climb over Beattock - during a blizzard - was painfully made at 25mph. As the train descended towards Carstairs No.6's compressors froze and the train halted 10 miles south of Carstairs. At this point the guard and driver met on the ballast and the driver was heard to say "Aye Doogie - yon big engine's a failure!" 81006 powering a northbound freightliner propelled 1S60 to the centre roads at Carstairs where rescue came in the form of 40166 from Motherwell. The direct route to Edinburgh was, however, blocked due to a derailment and 40166 hauled 55006 and 1S60 via Motherwell and Midcalder to Edinburgh where arrival was somewhat late!
