55005 (D9005) "THE PRINCE OF WALES OWN REGIMENT OF YORKSHIRE" takes one last look at the outside world before disappearing into Doncaster Works for the last time. No.5 sits at the Hexthorpe Bridge entrance to the plant on Saturday 21st February 1981 after its withdrawal from service on the 8th of the month. After yielding spares for the rest of the fleet at York 55005 was taken to Stratford TMD on the 16th February to donate its bogies to 55021 and was then sent to Doncaster Works on the 20th. As a possible candidate for preservation at York's National Railway Museum, due to its Yorkshire name, 55005 survived a further two years until February 1983 when it was finally cut up - 1st choice for the NRM 55002 (D9002) "THE KING'S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY" was by that time already happily preserved.
