Conclusions: 23.03.76 DME KX states: Locomotive was released to traffic temporarily 'no boiler'
and the safety valve was exchanged at Finsbury Park Depot on 09.02.76. This is a most unusual
casualty - the defective component has been forwarded to Doncaster Works under the 'Red Label'
procedure.

Casualty report states: loss of air - DME Leeds states: no fault found.
Conclusions: 02.03.76 DME KX states: A check on this locomotive's subsequent history reveals that
during the course of a 'D' examination two days later an air pipe to the brake application unit was
found to be chafed through on an adjacent double check valve at a point where it passes under No.2
end cab floor below the driver's seat. This was intermittently resulting in sufficient loss of air to cause
a brake application & was no doubt the cause of this casualty.
It is not stated if the loco came off at York or indeed worked through to Edinburgh.

Conclusions: 22.09.76 DME KX states: I note the repairs carried out by Gateshead Depot but due
to the previous unsatisfactory performance of this boiler, see casualty 21.07.76, the locomotive
was restricted to non-steam heated trains until it could be accompanied in traffic by a Technical
Inspector on an overnight sleeper on 24.08.76. This indicated an intermittent defect in the low fire
fuel solenoid valve but this has not yet received depot attention as the loco was taken out of traffic
on 27.08.76 and is currently in Doncaster Works awaiting replacement engines.

Repairs - boiler photo-electric cell replaced and boiler run and tested, no further fault found.

keeps shutting down due to low water conditions.

Conclusions: 29.11.76 DME KX states: This boiler was again reported as defective at Doncaster
on 10th November with suspect boiler water pump. The loco was again restricted 'no boiler' until
checked at Finsbury Park Depot on 13th November. The water pump valves were then found to
be suspect and were changed.

Conclusions: 23.12.76 DME KX states: In view of the above and its previous history the boiler
was specially examined on arrival at King's Cross the following day when it was found that the
boiler pump was having difficulty in maintaining the water level. Regional Control were
therefore advised that the boiler was out of order pending further attention at Finsbury Park.
This was given on 13/14 November when the water pump valves were found to be defective.

Casualty report states: boiler defective.
Conclusions: 12.01.77 DME KX states: This particular locomotive has a very bad history of
boiler failures, although not all have been the same type of defect. It has been ridden with, in
traffic, by Technical Staff on several occasions recently to try to ensure that all defects have
been cured. Even after the attention at Finsbury Park it has again been reported as not
performing completely satisfactorily and the type of fuel solenoid valve fitted, labelled as
ACO/TN/O, is now suspect. This has been raised with the CM&EE's representatives Mr Starkey.
1E40 19:20 Aberdeen - King's Cross, from Doncaster (assisting 55015 05/12).
Note: 55015 had failed with No.1 engine cut-out on 1E40 and was used as steam heat, 55018
providing power.
