Conclusions: 02.04.73 DME KX states: The overspeed governor was found to be tripped on return to Finsbury Park Depot, and it may therefore be that the driver had not attempted to reset it to allow the locomotive to work forward. I still await a report from DME Leeds on this aspect. I also await 'red Label' inspection report on the suspect governor. 16.08.73 Driver Whiting (Holbeck) reports the overspeed tripped three times between Huntingdon and Yaxley, he therefore requested a replacement loco at Peterborough, leaving the overspeed tripped for examination. 99,000 miles since last classified repair (25.11.72). Finsbury Park TMD. Repairs - No.1 engine governor changed and forwarded under 'Red Label' procedure.

I understand that the recently approved modification No. MB 212/51 includes replacement of the existing Niphon plug socket by the CPA type.

Casualty report states: No.2 engine shut down (overspeed tripped) - unable to fault on depot, however, No.2 engine overspeed governor changed as a precaution and old item forwarded under 'Red Label' procedure to Doncaster. Conclusions: 08.08.73 DME KX states: Depot Manager York to take up with his driver for failing to reset the overspeed trip. Driver Young (York) reports while working 1S32 on 07.08.73 the No.2 engine shut down at Stevenage, the controller fully open and no blue light, the train was running 12 minutes late due to late start and signals etc. I was reluctant to stop to examine so I asked the Secondman to look at the overspeed trip (No.2) and he reported that the Martinair was in the run position. Acting on this information I decided to whistle off so I could make a personal examination at Peterborough, clear the main line and have a standby loco ready. On arrival at Peterborough Loco No. 1513 was ready and positioned for a quick change and to avoid further delay changed locos - time taken 9 minutes.

23 -	King's Cross Loco. 'A' exam. 1L34 17:30 King's Cross - Bradford, to Peterborough (13 minute delay Peterborough - 1525 forward). Casualty report states: High water temperature - No.2 engine shut down (locomotive to Finsbury Park for investigation). 126,650 miles since last classified repair (25.11.72). Driver Glew (Holbeck) reports I lost No.2 engine with high water temperature within half an hour of leaving London. Despite the Secondman pumping, I lost it again twice before Huntingdon, so I whistled for a fresh engine at Peterborough. There was 11 minutes delay at Peterborough and I was right time into Leeds. Conclusions: 21.09.73 DME KX states: Please note that the weather at the time of this casualty was extremely hot. Following this and the previous casualty on 20th August, the locomotive was accompanied in service by my Technical Inspector on 24th august but became a casualty en-route due to failure of No.2 engine primary fan drive Carden shaft - the loco was then accepted for Classified repair proposed 22/08. Peterborough TMD. (0B02 Peterborough - Finsbury Park). Finsbury Park TMD. Repairs - no fault found (loco to be accompanied in traffic by Technical Inspector).

Casualty report states: No.2 engine defective - No.2 primary fan gearbox Carden shaft failed at universal joint (locomotive taken out of traffic for works attention). 127,000 miles since last classified repair (25.11.72). Conclusions: 21.09.73 DME KX states: I understand that the bearing spindle of the star coupling was worn to approximately 75% of its new diameter. This defect should, I consider, have been found at the previous 'B' examination - suitable notice is therefore being taken with the fitter concerned. Peterborough TMD. Conclusions: 23.11.73 DME KX states: It would appear that this late start was occasioned by a delay in servicing at Gateshead Depot and I would therefore question the justification for a mechanical casualty in this instance. It is known that these engines have a high lubricating oil consumption & in practice staff carrying out LD125 examinations usually check engine lubricating oil levels, although strictly speaking this is not called for and the locomotives are expected to run between 'A' examinations without attention. It should be noted that at the time of this casualty this locomotive was five hours overdue an 'A' examination.
